A New Roof means New Hope for Sandy Simon

Sometimes God lays things on our hearts, and you can look at a situation and see His handy work.

A couple of months ago Dan Yoder, one of our owners, felt led to help someone who needed a new roof.  In communicating with some of his friends at Light in the Valley Church  he discovered that the church wanted to partner as well to help someone in need, but they didn’t have a person in mind yet.

Meanwhile, Ken Troyer, another of our owners, was out meeting with clients and he met Sandy Simon.  Sandy’s husband passed away about a year ago, and her children aren’t able to help her much.  She lives alone, on a fixed income, with a decent sized property to take care of since her husband passed away.  She knew need she needed a new roof and Ken was looking at it give her a quote.  She told him she wasn’t sure how she was going to pay for it yet, but she needed the price so that she could try to work up the funds.  Ken saw an opportunity to give back, but didn’t say anything to her yet.

When Ken was discussing this roof with Dan, a plan began to formulate where Kline Home Exteriors, Light in the Valley Church, and First Choice Exteriors were able to partner up and cover the cost of the roof for Sandy.  When Ken went back to Sandy with this plan, she was absolutely floored.  She even called a couple days later to find out how much money she would need, and Ken had to explain again that it was all being donated to her. She was very touched through this process.  Sandy felt that there hasn’t been many people out there that were able to help her out in life.  She sent us a card (pictured below) saying “… I appreciate all that you’ve done for me, not only for the roof but for also restoring my faith that there truly are still decent, kind, generous people left in this world.”

Sandy Simon Card

Pictured here is a card that Sandy sent us.  It is a blessing to our company, staff, and crews to be able to pour into a person in need.

How to Choose the Right Contractor

Choosing the right contractor can be intimidating, especially if you are not given a reference or know someone personally.  We’ve all heard stories of home projects gone bad, where the contractor didn’t follow through on their word.  In fact, we have many stories of our clients where we able to come in and rectify a bad situation due to the previous contractor.

Here are a few tips to help you pick the right contractor:

  1. Compare Apples to Apples

There is often a lack of consistency in estimates, that’s hard to identify, when comparing contractor to contractor.  Make sure that you request the same work from each contractor.  On the flip side, ask each contract to describe what they may do differently from their competitor.

  1. Callback Turnaround

Responsiveness is key.  If this contractor doesn’t call you back within 48 hours they may be unreliable.  You need someone who is available for you, and keeps you in the communication loop.

  1. What Will Your Project Look Like?

Ask them how a typical project is ran? How big is the crew, what time do they show up, how long will it take them?  This will give you a good idea of how smoothly your project will go.

  1. What Do They Do Best

Find out what each contractor specializes in.  Residential, commercial, kitchen renovations, new construction… There are many different facets to construction.  You can also ask to see pictures of their past projects.  If they say they’re a roofer, but don’t have a lot of roofing projects to show you, there may be a problem.

  1. Check Them Out

Here are a few places/things to check:

-If they are registered with your city, check to see if there are any complaints filed against them?

-Do they carry the appropriate insurance?

-Do they have any references to show you, or refer you to?

-How long have they been in business?

Each of these items can be applied to any area of contracting, and should be looked at across the board.  So having said all that, here’s a little more about us!
